FloAdvisor #17: Oriental Massage Therapy: Which one is right for You?

The oriental culture considers the body and the mind as one psychophysical unit. Under this philosophy, different massage Therapies have been created to meet individuals´ needs and treat certain body conditions.

Shiatsu Massage

The technique applied in this Japanese method is guided by the Chinese Meridian System of body energy points on which specific amount of pressure is applied with the palm, thumb and fingers to promote energy flow and to provide pain relief and tensed muscles relaxation. Tapping, rubbing, kneading and squeezing are the primary pressure application techniques contrary to the popular belief that this massage therapy uses just needles at the pressure body points.

Tui Na Massage

It addresses the functions of the body related to the flow of healing energy (Qi). After energy balance is restored, the body is able to regain its natural self-healing abilities.

Thai Massage

It is also based on the concept of re-establishing the energy flow (Qi) within the body. It involves yoga style stretching, energizing and rigorous movements (similar to shiatsu). It is also being practiced in American spas today.

Zhi Ya Massage

It refers to a Chinese massage therapy that applies techniques of acupressure to locate some points on the body that could relieve large areas of the body from muscle stress and strain, by connecting to nerves which respond to stimulants. This process enables the body and the nervous system function a better way.

Acupressure Massage

It uses precise finger placement and pressure over specific points along the body. These points follow specific channels, known as meridians – the same channels used in acupuncture. According to Asian medical philosophy, activation of these points with pressure (or needles) can improve blood flow, release tension, and enhance or unblock life-energy “qi” or “chi.”
